Culture and history complex with great significance from 13th century, also known as Danube Giblartar.
Petrovaradin fortress is settled on the right bank of Danube river. It is 2 kilometres away from Novi Sad city centre and it is connected via Varadinski bridge.
Name Petrovaradin comes from several words. In Latin "Petra" stands for rock, "Var" is Hungarian for city, and "Din" in Turkish stands for faith. Connecting of these words builds "city on the rock, solid as a faith"
Fortress is located at serpentine - diorite rock, having dominant position in Pannonia plane, so it was fought over by many nations.
There are traces of inhabitancy since stone age, and this area was inhabited by Celts, Romans, Huns, Avars, Byzantines, Hungarians, Serbs and Turks. After expelling the Turks in 1692, Austrians begun building new fortification, today Petrovaradin fortress.
The fortress have had been built in baroque, as artillery fort, during the rule of Leopold I, Josef I, Carlo VI, Maria Teresa and Josef II.
Plans for building were made by Matthias Kaisersfeldt and Luigi Aloysius Ferdinand Marsigli and builders were noble Austrian architects Michael Wamberg and Albrecht Heinrick Schroeder.
In the second half of 18th century, underground part of the fortress was built and it consists of underground passages, galleries and halls 4 floors deep with length of over 16 kilometres. In this period, Well of Josef II was built, and Big War reserve Well.
The fort consists of Upper (which includes the fortress itself with walls) and Lower (suburban part with narrow streets and buildings, monastery, hospital and orthodox church).
Petrovaradin is second of a kind largest fortress in Europe and it falls in to one of the biggest, most complex and best preserved artillery forts in this part of Europe. It covers an area of over 100 hectares and has outer defence line 5200m in length.
It has been protected in 1948 and 1991 and declared as significant culture heritage and history complex with great significance.
Most famous tourist attraction is tower with clock, placed at bastion Ludvig. Baroque tower clock is specific, the big needle is for hours and small one for minutes, so people from great distance, especially boatman can see the time. Clock is being ran by original mechanism, daily winded up, and also in cold periods clock lates and in warm periods it hurries.
Besides Museum of city of Novi Sad, on the fortress is a number of ateliers, Art Academy of Novi Sad University, History Archive of Novi Sad and Observatory.
During the summer, the biggest music festival in this part of Europe - EXIT is being held.
ACTIVITIES FOR VISITORS
Walking and resting. This is ideal place for walk and rest in nature with view of the Danube river, Novi Sad and Fruška gora mountain.
Horseback riding. In one of the trenches there is horseback riding club, organizing recreational and therapeutically riding.
Culture and Science. Visiting Museum of city of Novi Sad, Art Academy of Novi Sad University, History Archive of Novi Sad and Observatory.

By foot, bike or public transport (buses 3, 9, 61, 62, 64, 69). You can also use bike rental system NS BIKE. Bikes can be rented at several locations.
